https://tsaitsunghsun.com TSUNGHSUN TSAI 蔡宗勳 Tue, 26 May 2026 17:34:29 +0000 https://tsaitsunghsun.com en https://tsaitsunghsun.com/sideflow Tue, 19 Jan 2021 13:39:30 +0000 TSUNGHSUN TSAI 蔡宗勳 https://tsaitsunghsun.com/sideflow https://tsaitsunghsun.com/Home Sun, 12 Aug 2018 15:05:13 +0000 TSUNGHSUN TSAI 蔡宗勳 https://tsaitsunghsun.com/Home https://tsaitsunghsun.com/Cave-Time Tue, 26 May 2026 17:34:29 +0000 TSUNGHSUN TSAI 蔡宗勳 https://tsaitsunghsun.com/Cave-Time 洞穴時間 素描、描圖紙、紙張、半透明輸出、燈片、LED燈、水泥、細沙、紅磚碎屑、貝殼、蝸牛、燈箱、光桌 Cave Time Sketch, tracing paper, paper, translucent print, backlit film, LED light, cement, fine sand, crushed red brick, seashell, snail, light box, light table 起初我環顧四周，開始思考這些建立起空間的物質從何而來？空間倚靠物質建構，而人走進其中，在裡頭停留、休息與生活，面對這些包裹與乘載我們的空間，是不是也像是走入這些物質當中？ 帶著這個想像與思考，我逐步來到高雄壽山，在壽山山腳曾經有一座台灣最早的水泥礦場，透過挖取石灰岩並燒製加工得到水泥—這個建築的基礎原料，壽山即是一座隆起的高位珊瑚礁石灰岩，透過珊瑚、貝殼與鈣質生物的遺骸形成岩體；而當一棟建物被蓋起時，地景就會有一部分消失，這些有著多樣貝殼痕跡的石灰岩與建築空間中的人為痕跡，在消減與增加的時間裡，物質成為多變的形體，在不同的時間中停留與註記，地景與居所，由石灰岩到建築，而我們是不是生活在一片地景之中呢？ 我循著向下的路徑，在風化與溶蝕後的石灰岩洞中時間隨著燈光顯現，在洞中被石灰岩環繞及身體被空間所包覆的體感，讓我想起在面對建築空間時的思考，關於物質與空間、關於地下與地上，以及兩種沉積的狀態，在洞穴移動的過程中我好像成為了殼中的人，手腳貼合著壁面移動，頭燈在洞中四處探索，洞穴與居住空間同樣在石灰岩中形成，像是生物以鈣質長出自己的家，而洞穴是殼也是居所，以光透出石灰岩的時間。 At first, I looked around and began to wonder: where do the materials that build up these spaces come from? Space relies on material construction, and as people enter, stay, rest, and live within it, are we not also entering into these very materials as they envelop and carry us? With these reflections, I gradually made my way to Shoushan in Kaohsiung. At the foot of Shoushan, there was once one of Taiwan's earliest cement quarries. Through the extraction of limestone and the firing process to produce cement—the foundational raw material of architecture—Shoushan reveals itself as an uplifted high-altitude coral reef limestone. The rock mass was formed through the remains of corals, shells, and calcified organisms; yet, when a building is erected, a part of the landscape disappears. Between these limestone rocks bearing diverse shell traces and the human traces within architectural spaces, through the time of depletion and addition, matter becomes a fluid form, lingering and leaving its mark across different eras. From limestone to architecture, from landscape to dwelling—are we not living within a singular, continuous landscape? I follow a downward path. Inside limestone caves shaped by weathering and erosion, time manifests with the flickering light. The physical sensation of being surrounded by limestone and enveloped by space reminds me of my thoughts on architectural environments: about matter and space, about the subterranean and the surface, and about two states of sedimentation. In the process of moving through the cave, I seem to become a person within a shell, moving with hands and feet pressed against the walls, my headlamp scouting the surroundings. Caves and living spaces are both formed within limestone, much like organisms growing their own homes from calcium. ・濕氣、霉味與悶響聲，坑道連接了一處位置與另一處位置，而坑道的位置又在哪呢？穿行在入口與出口之間的移動彷彿向前也是向後，時間好像在通道中懸停，它以什麼樣的狀態停留在坑道內？我試圖描繪坑道中的某個片刻切面，而它既是此處也在別處。 The Transparent Tunnel ・Mirror、Acrylic、Plaster、Glass cups、Woodwork・Variable dimensions ・Moisture, the smell of mildew, and muffled echoes—the tunnel connects one place to another, but where exactly does the tunnel itself lie? Moving between entrance and exit feels like moving forward and backward at once. Time seems to hover inside the passage, lingering in suspension—but in what form does it remain? 尺寸依場地調整・2025・「怎麼樣想像這裡呢？」這是我來到這個空間後開始思考的第一件事情，我沿著地面的磁磚走著，以水泥為界線，看著灰牆與各式新舊材質，「這是第一個房間，第二個房間，這裡應該有床、書桌和櫃子⋯⋯」我邊走邊想著，各式屋痕是不同時間存在的證明。 環顧空無一物的空間，我想像鳥類進駐，它們在這裡就地取材並織造出巢，有些散落的樹枝折射出環境，它們像是這裡的孔隙，我想樹枝是巢的建材，各式材質也是這個空間的建材；在隱退的牆中，屋子好像就是巢，巢構築出空間的巨大，依靠退縮於牆中的痕跡想像這個地方。 NEST ・Mirror acrylic, Paper, Pencil sketch, Cutting sheet；Clay, Woodpowder, place?" This was the first question that came to mind when I entered this space. I walked&nbsp; along the tiles on the ground, using the cement as boundaries, observing the gray walls and the various layers of old and new materials. "This is the first room, the second room, there should be a bed here, a desk, and a cabinet..." I thought to myself as I walked. The marks left in the house are evidence of existence across different periods of time. Looking around the empty space, I imagined birds taking up residence here, gathering materials from their surroundings to weave nests. Scattered branches reflected the environment, like tiny openings in this place. I thought of branches as the building materials for nests, just as the various materials here are the building materials of this space. Within the retreating walls, the house itself seemed like a nest—a nest that constructs the vastness of space. 從住處出發，我跟著沿路建築的影子抵達工作室，在每日的循環裡這些影子變成了我的指針，在移動的過程中我清楚地看著地面的影子，影子好像告訴我時間，在這樣的時間中，空間拉長了時間感，時長好像被放慢，我把沿途的影子放進工作室裡，疊合在不同轉角或牆面；而在工作室裡我聽著樓下若隱若現地鋼琴聲、空間的聲響與外頭馬路的環境音，我錄製每個房間中的環境音與琴聲搭配，以一首曲目的時間搭配著車聲、人聲，水滴聲等環境音，以聲音描述時間的變化。 影子、聲音像是指針，光影在時間的運動中改變長短，聲音因應著建築裡空間的不同或響或悶，我想像空間像是一顆大時鐘，轉動著個人的時間。 The sundial of House ・Pencil Sketch、Milk Board、Carpentry、Stereo Sound ・Variable dimensions ・2024 ・ Leaving my residence, I follow the shadows cast by buildings along the way to my studio. In the daily cycle, these shadows become my guide. As I move, I clearly observe the shifting shadows on the ground, as if they are telling me the time. In this perception of time, space stretches the sense of duration, making time feel slower. I bring the shadows from my journey into the studio, layering them over different corners and walls. Inside the studio, I listen to the faint piano sounds from downstairs, the subtle acoustics of the space, and the environmental noise from the street outside. I record the ambient sounds of each room, blending them with the piano melodies. A single piece of music aligns with the rhythm of passing cars, footsteps, and dripping water—using sound to describe the passage of time. Shadows and sounds act as my clock hands. Light and shadow shift in length as time moves, while sound varies in resonance and depth depending on the architecture. 從一個箱體開始，把它以為是床，看成一個家，也當作一座溫室，在生活、聚集、移動與居住中聯想。掀開蚊帳的紗簾，貌似是房屋的立面，又像徒入山林的車箱，在空間裡人與植物或躺或臥，箱內像是岔口交換著故事。 沿著台18 線、台21 線或阿里山林鐵上山，經熱帶與溫帶，處在回歸線的氣候帶，環狀的線徑使人聯想線上的不同地方，23.5 度的紀念標誌連成一線，因相似的氣候條件而產生關聯；緯線是線條、山徑像是繩結，互有交疊又繞行成迴圈，路徑的交疊與緯線的節點，世界好像因共有的集合偶然碰面。 Circle Round ・Writing、Sketch、Digital print、paper、 Hahnemühle Photo Rag、Pictures、Board ・ Variable dimensions ・2022 ・From humans, plants, to dwelling, this work revolves around the narrative ofmountains and its component descriptions. The work starts with a box, which can be viewed as a bed, a home, or even a greenhouse, bringing together associations with living, gathering, moving, and dwelling. Opening the curtain of mosquito nets, what appears is like the façade of a house, or a train car that goes into the mountains. In this space, people can lie down, and plants are laid on the floor. The space functions as an intersecting point where stories are exchanged. Following the Provincial Highway No. 18, No. 21, or the Alishan Forest Railway to enter the mountains, one journeys from the tropical zone to the temperate zone.In this climate zone situated on the Tropic of Cancer, the circle – a line marking the latitude 23.5 degree north – connects different places, which are associated together due to similar climatic conditions. On the latitude lines, mountain trails are like rope knots, overlapping while forming numerous circles. ・想像一個展覽的過程，總是在撿拾靈感，從走路、對話、移動與停留中；當我在紙上記錄展覽細節的過程時，紙背有許多字跡透出的壓痕，如果說在移動中找尋事物的靈感與書寫的過程皆是一種撿拾的話，那麽在路上的移動路徑與紙背的書寫痕跡們，也若有似無地重疊在一起了；這裡的所見，直到別處的佇足而有了累積，在足跡或字跡的堆積中，出現了遊歷於紙上的想像。 《谷線》以紙張作為開頭，像是紙上的痕跡，也是移動的路徑；書寫的字跡被紙張所紀錄，紙背成為正面，壓痕變為文字，透過書寫連成概念；字跡也像是走路的軌跡，左腳至右腳的連續時間，移動和書寫是一個不斷複寫的動作，足跡被地面留下，面對一張紙如同想像一個空間，而紙張貌似有了距離，或說處在空間中也是行走並踏逐於紙上，移動是為了接近某些事物，而事物的狀態卻也在移動中產生，並積累成為畫面。字跡是足跡、紙張像地面、書桌成為空間，從閱讀與走路中逐一被堆砌與壓印；我把這裡視作紙張，在收合與展開的地理上、在正反面的距離裡以及步行的閱讀中，由外而內，逐一回到關於作品意義的想像，並走入其中。 up inspirations, no matter from walks or conversations, within the period of moving or staying. I recorded all these details of the exhibition on papers, where inscribed words left marks on the back side. If the process of seeking and writing down inspirations arising in the mobile life is a gesture of picking things up, it seems that all these moving paths or marks on the back side of papers will somehow overlap in an implicit way. What we see in a place stay inside us even if we leave and stop by another. As these footprints and written words accumulate, it’s like we can travel on the papers. Valley Fold begins with papers. I see marks on the back sides of papers as paths of my migrations. Imagine written words and patterns being recorded down on papers. Through writing, the back side of the paper becomes the front and the marks transform into words then connect into concepts. Handwriting is just like walking traces. Within the time of steps, we constantly make duplicating moves known as writing and moving with all the footprints left on the ground. Facing a blank paper is just like imagining a space. Perhaps we can say being in a space is just like walking and stepping on papers. We move to get close to a thing but the thing generates its state and appearance as we move. Handwritings are our footprints; papers are the ground; the desk is the space which will be gradually stacked up and as we read and walk. I see this exhibition place as piles of papers. On the folding and unfolding terrains, within the distance of the front and back side, through reading and walking, from the outer to the interior, I return to the imagination of the artwork’s It’s a mildly cold season, yet the sun pouring into the exhibition feels intensely warm. The space is bright, sometimes even glaring. The compartment, light streaming through gaps and the further lower ceiling grid construct the ceiling which is similar to the one holding the time capsule in my memory. This provokes our curiosities to peep through and imagine what’s over there. The piles of jointed calcium silicates panels leaning against walls and corners. The piles are cramming with objects, like a tablet carved with words replicated from the original catalogue in Westinghouse Time Capsules, seeds from trees around TAV, wooden balls and the&nbsp; 21th-Century encyclopedia. Therefore, the work turns into an archaeological site, and the traces of time and history are embodied in it like a deposit. Far Side is developed from my strong curiosity toward the back sides of things, like the upper part of a ceiling or dates carved on calcium silicates panels, where, in other words, the past and the future are intertwined. Everything begins with myself, with my imagination about the Westinghouse Time Capsules in 1939. The time capsules chronicled life in the 20th century and portrayed this era with capitalized “WE.” From seeds gathering around the exhibition space to the location of the Westinghouse Time Capsules, from my 2012 to its 1939, I replace an era with a personal timeline, excavating imagination, expectation, depression, progression, action and communication. <img width="3000" height="2000"
